How to Know if You Are a Healthy Empath

An Empath is a person highly attuned to the feelings and emotions of those around them. Empaths feel what another person is feeling at a deep emotional level.


For many empaths, growing up is difficult. Because they can feel people's disapproval, judgments, and criticism so strongly, they learn at a very early age how to give others what they want to avoid the pain of their disappointment. This can turn into a vicious cycle of over-giving, overachieving, overanalyzing and becoming a people pleaser.


For a lot of empaths, people pleasing tendencies first develop as forms of self-protection so that you are not overstimulated by all the energetic, mental and emotional information your are constantly picking up. But being an empath is a gift. It is a super power, but you must learn how to use it.


Here is a list to review to see how it looks and feels being a healthy empath:

You take your feelings very seriously. To the rest of the world you may appear overly sensitive, but you know your feelings are there to guide you.

You don't sugarcoat the truth. You stand up for what you believe in and sometimes this creates conflict, but deep down you know what is true for you.

You feel very strong about passionate subjects. You’re not able to dismiss your intuition when you just know.

➝ You can feel others doubts, frustrations, or impure thoughts. You can just feel it. There is no way to describe why you feel it, but it is as real to you as a cup of coffee in your hand.


On the other hand... if you have given into the pattern of people pleasing and putting others before you because your empath gift seems a little overwhelming, you may have developed some unhealthy patterns. Here are some ways that we know we are traveling the path of being an unhealthy empath ...

You feel weighed down by the end of the day. This is probably not even from your own inner world, but you taking on the worlds of others.

You suppress your truth to keep the peace. This is the space of people pleasing that first develop as forms of self-protection. Since you can feel people's disapproval so strongly, you learned to give other people what they want to avoid the pain of their disappointment.

➝ You can feel others doubts, frustrations, or impure thoughts - BUT THINK THEY ARE YOURS. You identify with these emotions as if they are yours. This causes confusion and emotional instability. This is a boundary issue.

Your sensitivities create a lot of emotional disruption. You just have not yet figured out how to manage or stabilize your energy and therefore are moody, inconsistent, and chronically suffering because of it.

Being an empath is a gift. However, when this superpower is misunderstood or overwhelming, it can feel like a curse.
